Comfort food is something we all want after a hectic day to keep our soul happy. Every people have their own kind of comfort food. For me or most of the bengali people, comfort food is Dal-Rice-Aloo Bharta/Aloo chokha. I can have Dal-Aloo Bharta almost everyday. There are different type of recipes of bhartas. I’ll try to share it all with you. Today I’m going to share the recipe my most favourite bharta which is Aloo Tomato Bharta or Aloo Chokha. It’s too easy to make and tastes delicious.

It tastes best when you make it with good amount of chilis. But if you don’t like spicy food you can add chilis according to your taste. I’m adding 4-5 chilis cause I love it like that way.

Ingredients:

  • Potato (3-4 medium size)
  • Tomato (2 medium/1big)
  • Onion (2 medium/1big)
  • Dried red chili (2 pieces)
  • Green Chili (2 pieces)
  • Mustard oil (1 tablespoon)
  • Salt (depending on the number of potatoes, as per taste)

Preparation:

  • Take 3-4 potatoes and peel them. Then cut them into 2 halves and wash it.
  • To make Aloo Tomato Bharta, we need to slice 1big sized onion or 2 medium sized onion thinly.
  • Chop 2-3 green chilis. I like the Aloo Tomato Bharta spicy, if you don’t like spicy food then you can take 1chili.
  • Chop 2 dried red chilis. if you don’t like spicy food then you can take 1chili.
  • Chop 1big sized Tomato or 2 medium sized Tomato finely. So that it can get softer easily.

Process:

  1. At first take 3 glass of water in a pressure cooker. Add 3-4 peeled potatoes which you’ve already cut into halves in a pressure cooker.
  2. Cover the lid carefully and cook it with 2-3 whistles. Keep them aside till the vapour releases.
  3. Take a pan or kadhai. All 1 tablespoon of mustard oil in it. Aloo Tomato Bharta tastes best with mustard oil. Heat it for a minute in medium flame.
  4. At first add the chopped dried red chilis in the hot mustard oil. Let them fry till it changes it’s colour.
  5. Now add the chipped green chilis and cook them for 8-10 seconds.
  6. Add the thinly sliced onion in and cook it until it turns slightly brown in colour.
  7. Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and cook the onion. The salt will help to make the onion softer fast.
  8. Once the onion changes it’s colour, add the chopped tomatoes and let it cook.
  9. You can cover the kadhai and cook the Tomato in medium flame until it turns soft and mushy.
  10. Take the boiled potato out of pressure cooker and strain it. Now mash them with a spatula. Or you can mash it with your hands if it turns cold.
  11. Check the tomatoes. add the mashed potatoes in the kadhai when the onion amd tomatoes are well cooked.
  12. Now mix the mashed potatoes well until it gets mixed with the cooked tomato and onion. Check the salt. You can add some salt if needed at this time.

Your Aloo Tomato Bharta or Aloo Chokha is completely ready to serve. Serve it with a plate of hot steamed rice and a bowl of dal. Tale a slice of lime. Your soulful comfort food will be ready.
